Wondering what to do this weekend? SLMan has you covered. From special menus and pop-ups to the opening of Battersea Power Station’s multibillion-pound development, here’s what to get stuck into…

Wun's

LOOSEN YOUR BELTS

Wun’s Tea Room & Bar x Nick Molyviatis

Regular SLMan readers will know we rate Wun’s Tea Room & Bar for a slap-up Cantonese meal, so we were excited to hear the Soho restaurant is hosting a pop-up with Greek chef Nick Molyviatis (formerly of Kiln). On Friday 15th October, diners can try traditional Greek dishes alongside Wun’s signature menu. Highlights include langoustines with dill and bergamot, octopus and yellow split peas with freshly baked pittas, lamb offal fry ups, and galomizithra (a soft Cretan cheese) with tomato and barley. The pop-up is open from 6pm until 3am (perfect for late-night feasts), with music and special cocktails from mixologist Gerry Russo – think nettle gimlets and seaweed martinis.

HEAD SOUTH

Battersea Power Station

On Friday 14th October, Battersea Power Station will unveil the next stage of its multibillion-pound development, which includes over 100 shops, restaurants and bars, a pedestrianised high street and a lift experience in its Grade II-listed chimney. There’s also Control Room B – a bar housed in one of the station’s old control rooms – plus a cinema. To celebrate the opening, the venue is hosting a ‘Festival of Power’ this weekend and next, with family friendly activities, a light trail and live music. Don’t miss the duelling spectacle on Friday 14th October from 7pm when two ‘lords’ will fire multimillion-volt bolts at each other in the six-acre Power Station Park. As if that wasn’t enough, Where the Pancakes Are will be offering £1 pancakes all day.

Circus Road, Nine Elms, SW8 5BN; 14th-16th & 21st-23rd October

GET YOUR CULTURE FIX

Chris Killip at The Photographers' Gallery

The best photographers in the world are remembered for capturing key periods in time, and that’s exactly what the late Chris Killip did with his candid shots of industrial Britain in the late 70s and 80s. This exhibition features 140 photographs taken in the north of England, against a background of shipbuilding and coal mining. Most of the portraits are of men, women and children who were affected by huge economic shifts and plunged into poverty. Alongside the raw shots, the exhibition features uplifting images showing the togetherness of the communities Killip visited. Tickets cost £8.

16-18 Ramillies Street, West End, W1F 7LW; until 19th February 2023

CATCH A FILM

The Woman King

A timely release for Black History Month, The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, the film follows the epic journey of General Nanisca (Viola Davis) as she readies the next generation of recruits for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. John Boyega (Star Wars, Small Axe) and Lashana Lynch (No Time To Die, Ear for Eye) also star.
